What is Travelistic?

Travelistic is a site that lets you explore the world through video. We host all kinds of travel videos, including user uploads, professional content, and tourist board videos.

Who made it?

Travelistic is a property of Diversion Media, LLC, a startup company based in New York City. People in our company used to work for MTV, iFilm, IGN, and Condé Nast, among other places.

What's it built with?

Travelistic was built in Ruby on Rails, with a bunch of embedded Flash players and a MySQL database.

Can I give you a few suggestions?

But of course! Just email us at —thanks!

Why doesn't the video work?

All of our videos are encoded in Flash 8. If you can't see the video, you probably need to install the free Flash 8 (or Flash 9) player software, which you can get at http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/. If you're using Internet Explorer for Mac, you probably can't even see this page, because that's a browser we don't support—try Safari or Firefox. We also have a limited amount of bandwidth available at any given time, and it's possible that we just can't support enough users—if so, we're probably adding capacity as you read this, just give us a day or two.

Can I submit content to you?

Yes! Just go to the "upload" tab. We'd love to host your travel video!

Can I embed clips on my website?

You can embed most of the clips on our site on your own website. Just use the embed code that you'll find on the video detail page.

That Google Maps thing is cool. How does it work?

Google Maps is great, but you have to give them a latitude and longitude, plus some parameters on scale, if you want to get a map that shows a specific location. We've built a little system that automatically generates lat/longs and window parameters for over 15,000 countries, cities and regions around the world, and we use that to ask Google for the right map.

Can I use it on my site?

Yes, you can—we decided to make our location service free for everyone. It's something that should come in handy if you're publishing any kind of content associated with a location—videos, blog posts, photos—even e-commerce stuff like flights and hotels.

I have a travel blog. What can you do for me?

If you have a cool travel blog, we want to be friends. You can take most of our videos and publish them on your site, using the embed code that's on the video detail page. You can also use our location matching service if you want cool Google Maps thingies associated with your posts. And of course you can create a profile, link to your blog, upload videos and use us to publish on your blog yourself!

Will Travelistic always be free?

There will always be a free version of Travelistic, but we may introduce a premium version in the future, with higher-resolution videos, more portability, and fewer ads.

Can I download videos to my iPod?

Right now you can't download our videos directly to your iPod. This is primarily a rights issue. But we're working on it.

Can I watch videos on my mobile phone?

We have both rights and technical issues involved with delivering all of our videos to mobile phones. But we're working on this as well.

How do I advertise on Travelistic?

Our video inventory is represented by Instream; you can either buy ads through them, or contact us directly at .

Why do you spell "Peking" "Beijing"?

Transliteration is a bit of a tricky problem with any kind of world map. We try to use just one place name for each location. But if you really think we need another, just enter it as a tag!

What's a tag?

Tags are keywords that we use in lots of different ways. One of the cool things about them is that you can add your own. Just click on "add tag" and try it!

Are you hiring?

We've grown from two people to nine over the past few months, and will undoubtedly keep growing. Email if you like what we're doing and think you have some skills to contribute!
