Mount Damāvand is a dormant volcano and the highest peak in Iran and whole Middle East, also the highest volcano in all of Asia. Located in the middle Alborz Range, near the southern coast of the Caspian Sea, 66 kilometres northeast of Tehran. Though not volcanically active, there are fumaroles near the summit crater that deposit sulfur, which were active during our climbing in July, 2007.
